Gladys and her best friend, Josephine, met at church in 1961. From the very start, from what I’ve been told since I wasn’t even born yet, they were destined to become best friends for the rest of their lives.
Later on when I came into the picture, even as a kid, it was clear to see that they had a special relationship. As the years went by, I was blessed to see why it was so special. It wasn’t special because they bought each other expensive gifts or were part of some elite social group. It wasn’t special because one of them drove a fancy car or wore designer clothes.
It was special because their friendship was built on the genuine love and caring that friendships should be built on.
It was built on the simple things: true mutual respect for one another; the willingness to help each other however they could and in whatever circumstances; the ability to just sit and talk and that be enough; and sharing the simple and what many would call the mundane things in life. These things built a friendship that lasted for decades.
